Manipur Assembly Urges Prompt NRC Implementation in Landmark Resolution
Desk Report, March 01, 2024: In a decisive move on Friday, the Manipur Legislative Assembly adopted a resolution, reasserting its commitment to a resolution previously taken by the Government of Manipur on 5th August, 2022. The Assembly also called upon the Government of India to expedite the implementation of the National Register of Citizenship (NRC) in Manipur, emphasizing the significance of this action for the state and the nation at large.
The proposal for NRC implementation, originally put forth by Naga Peoples Front MLA K. Leishiyo as a private member resolution, gained momentum and was elevated to the status of a Government Resolution during the Assembly session. This transformation occurred despite the absence of 5 Opposition Congress MLAs, who chose to walk out of the session following a disagreement.
In staunch support of the resolution, N Biren Singh, the Leader of the House, advocated for converting the private member resolution into a Government resolution. Speaker Th. Satyabrata, proposing the adoption of the resolution, reiterated the Assembly’s commitment by reaffirming the Government of Manipur’s previous resolution from 5th August, 2022. Additionally, the Assembly urged the Government of India to implement the NRC in Manipur.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh, addressing the Assembly, underscored the significance of the day’s proceedings. He stated, “Today, the Manipur Legislative Assembly took a significant step by reaffirming our resolution passed on 5th August 2022. It is our firm belief that the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur is crucial for safeguarding the interests of our state and contributing to the greater good of our nation.”
Singh continued, “The decision to urge the Government of India to expedite the implementation of the NRC reflects our commitment to ensuring the security and integrity of Manipur. I urge all citizens to support this endeavor as we strive to build a stronger, more prosperous Manipur for generations to come.”
