Rampant Operation of Unauthorized Sawmills Imperils Dhubri’s Forests, Authorities Grapple with Unchecked Growth
Dhubri, March 01, 2024: In a disconcerting revelation, clandestine and unauthorized sawmills operating in Dhubri and its adjacent regions are sounding alarms for environmental conservationists and authorities alike. The illicit operations, specifically located in Ambari, Toppara, Baniamari, Kalapakani Char, Bhogdohor, and Baghmara, falling under the purview of the Forest Check Station Range, Dhubri, have been identified as major contributors to the illegal logging of valuable tree species such as sal, teak, gamari and many more non exempted species.
Equally troubling are reports from Bhelakoba and Tushpara, under the jurisdiction of the Sapatgram Forest Depot Range, where unauthorized tree felling is also taking place. Disturbingly, sources suggest the involvement of departmental employees in facilitating the continued operation of these illegal sawmills. Despite sporadic official raids, the establishments persist, prompting concerns about the effectiveness of enforcement measures and the need for more stringent actions.
The proximity of these illegal sawmills to the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) compounds the gravity of the situation, amplifying the environmental impact on the already vulnerable green forests in the BTR area. The ongoing, unchecked operations of these illicit sawmills pose a severe threat to the delicate ecological balance and biodiversity of the entire region.
A critical concern arises regarding the persistence of these establishments despite official interventions. The question looms large: will authorities take decisive and sustained action to permanently dismantle these illicit operations, or will closures merely be temporary, allowing the resumption of activities shortly thereafter? The urgency of this issue is underscored by its potential long-term consequences on the environment and the intricate ecosystems of Dhubri and its neighboring regions.
It is imperative that authorities prioritize the protection of the region’s forests and swiftly implement effective measures to curb these illegal activities. The looming threat to the ecological well-being of Dhubri and its surroundings necessitates a proactive and resolute response to safeguard the invaluable biodiversity and preserve the delicate balance of the affected areas. The time for action is now, as the consequences of inaction may irreversibly compromise the environmental integrity of this vital region.
