BJP Forms Committee to Investigate Alleged Political Violence in West Bengal
Desk Report, June 15, 2024: On Saturday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) established a four-member committee to examine the alleged political violence in West Bengal. The committee comprises Biplab Kumar Deb, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Brij Lal, and Kavita Patidar, all BJP Members of Parliament, with Deb serving as the convener.
The BJP has accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of being a passive observer amidst what they describe as rampant violence by her party’s members against opposition workers and voters. The party asserted in a statement, “West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remains a mute spectator, while criminals of her party, attack and intimidate opposition workers and voters, with impunity.”
Further, the BJP highlighted that even the Calcutta High Court has recognized the situation, ordering the extended deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) until June 21, with a hearing scheduled for June 18.
The BJP emphasized that no incidents of political violence were reported from other parts of the country during the Lok Sabha elections, singling out West Bengal for ongoing violence reminiscent of the post-2021 assembly elections. “It continues to be in the vice grip of post-poll violence, the kind we saw post-2021 assembly elections,” the BJP alleged.
The committee’s formation signals the BJP’s intent to address and investigate the claims of violence and intimidation in the politically volatile state of West Bengal.
