Wildlife Smuggling Foiled in Assam: Pangolin Recovered, Two Held in Bongaigaon
Assam, March 8, 2026: In a major crackdown against wildlife trafficking, the Abhayapuri Range of Aie Valley Division conducted a successful secret operation in Bongaigaon district of Assam. The operation was carried out under the leadership of the Forest Ranger of Abhayapuri Range along with personnel from the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), following approval from the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Aie Valley Division.
During the operation, a rare Indian Pangolin, locally known as Bon Rui, was rescued from suspected wildlife smugglers. The team also seized a two-wheeler used in the illegal activity.
Two persons identified as Osman Gani from Chalantapara and Abu Sayed from Dakhnabari were arrested in connection with the case. Authorities have launched further investigation to uncover the wider network involved in illegal wildlife trade.
Officials described the operation as a significant success for the Aie Valley Division and the Assam Forest Department in their ongoing efforts to combat wildlife trafficking and protect endangered species.
