Assam RTI Activist Dulal Bora Arrested in Delhi for Alleged Misuse of RTI Act for Personal Gains
Desk Report, September 25, 2024: Delhi Police arrested Assam-based RTI activist Dulal Bora on Wednesday morning, accusing him of misusing the Right to Information (RTI) Act for personal benefits. He was detained in Delhi and is set to be brought to Assam shortly.
Bora, a known RTI activist, allegedly exploited the RTI Act to gain personal advantages. He reportedly filed an RTI application concerning irregularities in constructing a local temple at Rajapukhuri panchayat. Despite receiving responses from the concerned department, he allegedly continued to harass panchayat representative Debojit Hazarika.
Unfortunately, the situation took a tragic turn. Debojit Hazarika, a local BJP leader, reportedly ended his life after facing alleged harassment. In his suicide note, Hazarika named Dulal Bora and three others, including two journalists, as being responsible for his distress.
In addition, there are allegations against Bora of using RTI documents to lodge multiple complaints against government officials. This pattern of actions raised concerns over his intentions, suggesting he might have been exploiting the RTI process for personal motives.
Authorities are investigating these claims, aiming to clarify the extent of Bora’s involvement. The arrest highlights growing concerns over the potential misuse of the RTI Act, emphasizing the need for more accountability in using this crucial tool.
This incident has sparked discussions about the ethical use of RTI and its implications for transparency and governance in Assam. The authorities are expected to conduct a detailed inquiry into Bora’s actions and motives, ensuring justice is served.
