Justice B R Gavai Appointed 52nd Chief Justice of India; Oath on May 14

April 30, 2025: Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has been named the 52nd Chief Justice of India. He will assume office on May 14, 2025. The appointment follows the scheduled retirement of current CJI, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, on May 13.

The Ministry of Law and Justice issued the official notification on the appointment. President Droupadi Murmu approved the decision using her constitutional authority. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the announcement on platform X.

He wrote, “In exercise of the powers under the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from May 14, 2025.”

Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was born on November 24, 1960. He hails from Maharashtra. He began his legal practice in 1985 and joined the Bombay High Court as a judge in 2003. Later, he was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019. Justice Gavai is known for his balanced approach and firm judicial decisions.
