Assam Vigilance Arrests Gaon Panchayat Secretary for Accepting Bribe in Bongaigaon
Desk Report, September 26, 2024: The Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, has apprehended Ranjit Kr. Sarkar, Secretary of North Salmara Gaon Panchayat in Bongaigaon district. He was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe in his office on Wednesday. The incident took place after the complainant reported Sarkar’s demand for a bribe in processing bills.
Vigilance officials acted swiftly based on the complaint, setting up a trap to catch the suspect in the act. As soon as Sarkar accepted the bribe from the complainant, the officers intervened and arrested him. The authorities also seized the bribe money as evidence.
The investigation revealed that Sarkar had demanded an illegal sum to clear the bills related to official work. His arrest serves as a clear warning to others engaging in corrupt practices in public offices.
Authorities have urged citizens to report such cases to curb corruption in government offices. The Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption remains vigilant, ensuring that public servants are held accountable for any unethical actions.
