Veteran Assamese Actor and Filmmaker Kulada Kumar Bhattacharya Passes Away at 91
Guwahati: Legendary Assamese actor and filmmaker Kulada Kumar Bhattacharya has passed away at the age of 91, bringing an end to a remarkable career in Assam’s cultural landscape. Bhattacharya, who had been struggling with illness, died at 8:20 PM on Friday at Guwahati’s Dispur Hospital, after spending two days in intensive care on a ventilator.
Bhattacharya, born on August 18, 1933, in Panbazar, Guwahati, began his journey in the performing arts at the young age of six. He pursued his education locally, graduating from Cotton College with a Bachelor’s degree and later earning a Master’s in History from Gauhati University. Known for his resonant voice and powerful stage presence, he gained acclaim in radio dramas, notably through the popular program Parashuram.
In the mid-1960s, Bhattacharya played a key role in founding the Assam National Theatre, promoting Assamese theater and arts at a time when local productions were gaining momentum. His talents took him to London, where he trained in theater, film, and television, and he later served as director of Jyoti Chitraban, Assam’s premier film and television institution.
Beyond his artistic achievements, Bhattacharya served on the jury for the National Film Competition and the Indian Panorama. He remained deeply connected to his roots and chose a meaningful legacy: upon his passing, his body will be donated to the Ellora Vigyan Mancha, with no traditional funeral rites.
In response to his passing, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed heartfelt condolences, saying, “I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of veteran actor Kulada Kumar Bhattacharya.
