Desk Report, April 06, 2024: The Delhi Crime Branch, in collaboration with the Delhi Police and Bishnupur District police, apprehended Monarch Laishram, a senior assistant at the State Bank of India (SBI) Bishnupur branch, for allegedly absconding with approximately Rs 2 crore from the bank. The arrest took place at Patel Chest Christian Colony, opposite Maurice Nagar Police Station, North Delhi, on April 5, around 5:30 pm.
Hailing from Kodompokpi Mamang Leikai, under the jurisdiction of Nambol police station, Monarch Laishram had been on the run since April 2. His disappearance was reported to the Nambol Police Station by the branch manager of SBI Bishnupur Branch.
According to the complaint lodged by the branch manager, Monarch Laishram had been employed as a senior assistant at the branch and had failed to report to work or respond to office communications since April 2, without providing any prior notice. The complaint further highlighted that Monarch was in possession of the keys to the bank’s locker room.
The missing sum of approximately Rs 2 crore was discovered by the bank staff upon accessing the locker room, prompting the branch to file a formal complaint with the local police. Subsequently, the state police initiated a search operation to trace the accused.
A team from the Bishnupur District police is set to escort Monarch Laishram back to Bishnupur by air on Saturday to face legal proceedings.
The apprehension of Monarch Laishram brings some relief to the SBI Bishnupur branch, which had been grappling with the significant financial loss. Further investigations are underway to ascertain the details of the alleged theft and to recover the stolen funds.
The State Bank of India is yet to release an official statement on the incident, and the motive behind the theft remains unclear.
