Heavy Rainfall Causes Brahmaputra River Levels to Surge, Submerging Villages in Dhubri
Dhubri, July 03, 2024: Continuous and heavy rainfall has caused water levels in the Brahmaputra River and several of its tributaries to rise steadily, leading to severe flooding in Dhubri. The river’s water level in Dhubri has reached 29.70 metres, significantly surpassing the danger level of 28.62 metres. This increase has resulted in extensive flooding across the Dhubri Revenue Circle, with many villages and chars (riverine islands) submerged.
The most affected areas include Chalakura Parts I, II, III, IV, and V, as well as some regions within the Dhubri Municipal area. The floodwaters have lodged in these areas, causing widespread disruption and damage. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) is at the forefront of the response efforts, coordinating closely with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
Authorities are maintaining vigilant surveillance of the situation, implementing measures to mitigate flood risks. Emergency response teams and local administration remain on high alert to facilitate potential evacuations and provide essential aid to those impacted. The floods have submerged villages and agricultural lands, resulting in significant displacement and damage.
In light of the rising water levels, the District Administration has halted ferry services across the Brahmaputra River. Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay informed through local authorities and adhere to advisories issued by the DDMA and other emergency services.
For the latest updates and safety measures, residents should maintain communication with local authorities and follow all issued advisories.
