Union Cabinet Clears ₹22,864 Crore High-Speed Corridor from Meghalaya to Assam to Boost Connectivity
April 30, 2025: In a major infrastructure boost, the Union Cabinet on April 30, 2025 under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a greenfield high-speed road corridor project. This 166.80 km corridor will connect Mawlyngkhung near Shillong in Meghalaya to Panchgram near Silchar in Assam.
The project will be built along National Highway-6 (NH-6) and aims to transform road connectivity in Northeast India. Out of the total stretch, 144.80 km lies in Meghalaya and 22.00 km in Assam.
The corridor to cost ₹22,864 crore and will serve as a crucial part of the region’s transport network. It will seamlessly link with major highways including NH-27, NH-106, NH-206, and NH-37. This will ensure better access to Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, and other key towns like Diengpasoh, Ummulong, Phramer, Khlieriāt, Ratachera, Umkiang, and Kalain.
The high-speed corridor promises to ease traffic movement between Guwahati and Silchar. It will cut travel time and improve road conditions significantly.
Moreover, the new alignment will strengthen connectivity to Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam’s Barak Valley. This will support trade routes and allow smoother flow of goods and services across the region.
Officials said the corridor would raise logistics efficiency nationwide. It will also support industrial growth in Meghalaya and open new economic opportunities.
Another key goal of this project is to promote tourism. It will link scenic locations in the Northeast and make travel easier for tourists.
This corridor marks a strategic step toward unlocking the full potential of Northeast India. It not only promises better transport but also aims to fuel industrial and tourism growth in the region.
