Abdul Khaleque Meets Sonia Gandhi Amidst Political Turmoil
Desk Report, March 20, 2024: In a recent development, Abdul Khaleque, a prominent figure in Assam’s political landscape and Lok Sabha MP representing Barpeta, engaged in discussions with former Congress President Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Wednesday. This meeting follows closely on the heels of his prior encounter with All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary-Organisation KC Venugopal in the capital, occurring shortly after his resignation from the party.
Addressing the press post-meeting, Khaleque revealed that his conversation with Sonia Gandhi was extensive and constructive. He conveyed his concerns to the central leadership of the Congress, who assured him of addressing the issues at hand. “I met Madam Sonia Gandhi today. We had a very fruitful discussion. I told her what I had on my mind. I will not comment on whether I will again rejoin the Congress party or not. Whatever I had written on my resignation letter, I discussed the same things with Sonia Gandhi ji,” he stated.

Asserting his unwavering faith in Sonia Gandhi, Khaleque emphasized the diligent efforts of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi towards combating the incumbent administration. “From the very beginning, I have been telling that I have full confidence in Sonia Gandhi ji. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge ji and Rahul Gandhi ji are working very hard to change the anti-people government. They have assured me to look into my concern. I want the BJP to be defeated,” he added.
Responding to inquiries about his electoral plans, Khaleque clarified that he will not be contesting in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
This development marks another twist in the tumultuous journey of the Assam Congress, with Abdul Khaleque’s departure from the party further unsettling its already shaky foundation. Despite state Congress president Bhupen Borah’s overtures, Khaleque appears resolute in his decision, closing the door on any potential return.
