Morigaon, January 16, 2024 — Breaking free from years of prohibition, Ahatguri in Morigaon witnessed the revival of the local buffalo fight, Moh-Juj, during the Pahela Magh festivities. Despite challenges posed by the ban, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, MP Pabitra Margherita, MLAs Ramakant Deori, Jitu Goswami, and Rupak Sharma, alongside the Chief Minister’s wife, Rinki Bhuiyan Shama, graced the event as chief guests.
Regrettably, stringent regulations prevented a full-scale event at the Ahatguri heritage site, setting it apart from other regions in the state.
The buffalo fight unfolded on January 16, marking a significant cultural resurgence during the Magh Bihu celebrations in mid-January. This age-old tradition involves organized combat between two male buffaloes and holds immense cultural significance in Assam.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s presence underscored the importance of preserving and promoting traditional practices while navigating regulatory constraints. The event’s success in Ahatguri, albeit limited, resonates with the enduring cultural heritage embedded in Assam’s festivities.
As communities strive to strike a balance between tradition and compliance with evolving norms, the buffalo fight’s revival in Ahatguri serves as a poignant reminder of the cultural resilience and heritage that continue to shape Assam’s festive landscape. The festivities, despite limitations, contribute to the preservation and celebration of local customs, offering a glimpse into the cultural mosaic of the region.
