Heatwave Forces Kamrup Metro Schools to Revise Schedules and Implement Safety Measures
Guwahati, September 21, 2024: In light of the persistent heatwave affecting the Kamrup Metro district, the District Elementary Education Office under the Axom Sarba Siksha Abhijan Mission, Kamrup (M), has issued a series of guidelines to safeguard students and staff from the rising temperatures.
The order, released on September 20, 2024, after consultations with the District Commissioner of Kamrup Metro, mandates that all private and government schools, including those under central government administration, adhere to the following measures:
1. Revised School Timings: To mitigate the impact of the heat, schools are required to start their sessions at 7:30 AM and conclude by 12:30 PM, allowing students to avoid the afternoon heat.
2. Indoor Assemblies: Principals and heads of schools have been instructed to conduct morning assemblies indoors to prevent students from prolonged exposure to the heat.
3. Hydration Facilities: Schools must ensure that students have access to adequate drinking water and ensure that the water facilities within the school premises are operational.
4. Dress Code Adjustments: Students will be advised not to wear waistcoats or ties during this period, allowing for a more comfortable dress code suitable for the extreme weather conditions.
5. Ventilation and Fan Functionality: The circular emphasizes the need for proper ventilation in classrooms, with a directive to ensure all fans are functioning. In the event of power outages, schools are expected to arrange alternative power backups.
These measures will be implemented from September 21, 2024, until further notice to reduce the effects of the heatwave on students and staff. The circular also encourages schools to prioritize the well-being of students by creating a comfortable and safe environment.
The order has been forwarded to all relevant education authorities and institutions across Kamrup Metro for strict compliance.
