IMD Reports Severe Heatwave and Imminent Cyclonic Activity in Assam
Guwahati, May 24, 2024: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that Guwahati experienced temperatures close to 40°C on Friday, signaling a significant heatwave across the city. Specifically, temperatures are forecasted to reach 39°C in areas around IIT Guwahati and Guwahati airport. Thunderstorms and lightning, accompanied by rain or thundershowers, are also likely.
Looking ahead, the IMD predicts extreme heat and humidity in most parts of Assam over the next 48 hours. Maximum temperatures are expected to be 5-7 degrees Celsius above normal. Residents are advised to take precautions against the heat and potential thunderstorms.
The IMD has also issued a warning for increased thunderstorms and rainfall in Assam from May 26 to May 27, 2024. This is due to a developing weather system in the Bay of Bengal. A Low Pressure Area over the west-central and southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a Depression by May 24 morning. It is likely to develop into a Cyclonic Storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by May 25 morning, moving northwards towards the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal.
As a result, Assam is expected to experience widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. On May 26, light to moderate rainfall is predicted across most of the state. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Goalpara, Bongaigaon, and Dima Hasao districts, with thunderstorms and lightning likely in several other districts.
Similar weather conditions are forecasted for May 27. Light to moderate rainfall is expected across most of Assam, with heavy to very heavy rainfall predicted in Dima Hasao, Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts. Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Darrang, Udalguri, and other districts are expected to experience heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely in isolated areas across the state.
