Assam’s Waterways Undergo Major Transformation for Enhanced Safety and Connectivity
Guwahati: The Assam Inland Water Transport Development Society (AIWTDS) is taking substantial steps to modernize Assam’s waterways, focusing on enhancing safety, infrastructure, and connectivity. In line with Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s vision, AIWTDS aims to establish an advanced inland water transport system to benefit millions in the state.
To strengthen regulatory oversight, the Assam Inland Water Transport Regulatory Authority (AI WTRA) and Assam Inland Waterways Company Limited (AIWCL) have been established. These bodies aim to enforce safety standards and manage inland water transport efficiently.
Night navigation is another significant development, allowing over 850,000 passengers to safely travel across Assam’s waterways after dusk. This advancement provides greater flexibility and accessibility for those relying on water transport.
Modernization of the ferry fleet is underway, with 20 advanced steel catamarans joining the existing fleet. The fleet now boasts a range of vessels, including search and rescue units, tugboats, mobile operating bases, and survey boats, enhancing both safety and operational capacity.
Additionally, the Jibondinga Scheme has been introduced to support country boat operators. Through this program, 840 marine engines and essential safety gear are distributed, improving both safety and efficiency for operators and passengers alike.
In infrastructure upgrades, fixed and modular terminals have been established in key locations, such as the Gateway of Guwahati, North Guwahati, Umananda, Neamati, and Aphalamukh. These terminals are expected to facilitate smoother passenger movement and more efficient ferry services.
To assess and review these initiatives, Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota recently held a meeting with AIWTDS officials. The meeting emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming Assam’s inland water transport, making it a safer, faster, and more reliable mode of transportation for residents.
