Assam Records Phenomenal Growth in Tourism, Nearly 1 Crore Visitors in 2022-23
Guwahati, September 28, 2024: Assam, known for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, has emerged as a leading tourist destination in India. The state has witnessed a significant rise in tourist arrivals, both domestic and international, over the past two decades, thanks to improved facilities, enhanced infrastructure, and lasting peace in the region.
According to official data, Assam’s tourism sector experienced remarkable growth, with domestic tourist arrivals rising from 22,86,630 in 2004-05 to 98,12,195 in 2022-23. This impressive increase reflects Assam’s evolving status as a preferred travel destination for Indian tourists. International tourism has also shown considerable progress, with arrivals increasing from 7,285 in 2004-05 to 18,946 in 2022-23. The upward trend indicates growing global interest in Assam’s unique attractions.
The tourism sector’s recovery post-COVID-19 has been particularly impressive. After a brief decline during the pandemic, tourist footfall surged in 2022-23, almost reaching pre-pandemic levels. This resurgence is a testament to the state’s efforts to revitalize tourism through improved infrastructure and enhanced safety measures.
The success can be attributed to Assam’s diverse tourist attractions, including wildlife sanctuaries, historical monuments, and the renowned Kaziranga National Park, which is home to the endangered one-horned rhinoceros. Additionally, the state’s cultural festivals, tea gardens, and scenic landscapes continue to draw visitors from across the globe.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on the microblogging site ‘X’: “Assam’s tourism sector is booming and attracting people from far and wide. Due to improved law & order and infrastructure, lakhs of people have visited our State. The recovery post-COVID has also been phenomenal as we saw a footfall of nearly 1 crore tourists.”
This significant achievement underscores Assam’s potential to become a premier tourist destination in India and beyond.
