Assam Govt Launches ‘Shraddhanjali Scheme’ to Ensure Dignified Return of Mortal Remains from Across India

Assam Govt Rolls Out ‘Shraddhanjali Scheme’ to Assist Families in Bringing Back Loved Ones Respectfully

Guwahati, October 06: In a compassionate and humane initiative, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today inaugurated the ‘Shraddhanjali Scheme’, a special project of the Government of Assam aimed at ensuring the dignified and respectful transportation of mortal remains of Assamese residents who pass away outside the state.

The scheme reflects the government’s deep sensitivity towards the sentiments of families who lose their loved ones away from home. Through this initiative, the Assam government seeks to offer complete logistical and financial assistance to bring back the mortal remains of domiciled residents from anywhere in India to their native places in Assam.

The ‘Shraddhanjali Scheme’ will be implemented by the Special Branch of the Assam Police, ensuring swift coordination and support during such difficult times. Families or individuals in need of assistance can contact the authorities through multiple channels — the police control room helpline number 112, the Special Branch control room number 0361-2381511, the Sewa Setu portal, or WhatsApp at 91810-14888.

Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that the scheme embodies the government’s commitment to uphold the dignity of every individual, even after death. “The pain of losing a loved one is profound, and the challenge of bringing the mortal remains home often adds to the family’s distress. The Shraddhanjali Scheme is a heartfelt effort to ease that burden,” he stated.

With this initiative, the Government of Assam has taken a significant step towards providing emotional and logistical support to bereaved families. The scheme also underscores the administration’s resolve to stand by its citizens, ensuring that every Assamese, no matter where they are, receives a final journey home with dignity and respect.
