Flood Devastation in Assam: Death Toll Reaches 72, Situation Improves Marginally
Guwahati, July 09, 2024: The flood situation in Assam, though showing signs of slight improvement, continues to wreak havoc across the state, with the latest official bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reporting a death toll of 72. The number of affected individuals has decreased marginally to approximately 1,880,783, down from 2,274,289 recorded in the last 24 hours.
Reports indicate that floodwaters have inundated 27 districts, encompassing Dhubri, Cachar, Kamrup, Goalpara, Hailakandi, and several others, severely affecting daily life and infrastructure. A total of 3,154 villages have been submerged, and agricultural losses are staggering, with 49,014.06 hectares of crop area devastated.
Currently, 48,124 individuals are taking refuge in relief camps spread across 19 districts, underscoring the urgent need for humanitarian assistance. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued forecasts predicting moderate rainfall across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and other northeastern states over the next 24 hours. The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms and lightning in these regions, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in isolated areas, exacerbating the ongoing crisis.
Efforts are underway to mitigate the effects of the floods, but the situation remains critical as authorities and relief agencies continue their relief and rescue operations amidst challenging conditions.
