Assam Sub-Districts Renamed as Co-Districts; ADCs to Lead New Structure from October 4, 2024
Guwahati: Assam is all set to implement a new administrative structure at the district level, starting from October 4, 2024. This initiative will introduce the concept of ‘Sub-districts,’ which will be led by an Additional District Commissioner (ADC). The Assam Cabinet recently approved a significant change, renaming these ‘Sub-districts’ to ‘Co-Districts’ for better clarity and efficiency.
The Co-Districts will be headed by a Co-District Commissioner, ensuring more streamlined and effective governance. This move aims to enhance administrative efficiency by providing a more localized structure, enabling quicker decision-making and smoother functioning. The introduction of this structure comes in response to the growing responsibilities and powers that these administrative units handle.
By implementing Co-Districts, the Assam government intends to bridge the gap between district-level administration and grassroots governance. This change is expected to bring about a more responsive and effective administrative setup, benefitting citizens across the state.
The new system represents a significant step towards decentralization, offering more autonomy to the district administration. It is expected to ensure that public services are delivered promptly and efficiently, thus improving the overall governance experience for the people of Assam.
