Assam Cabinet Renames Karimganj District to Sribhumi: Honoring Tagore’s Vision
Guwahati: In a historic move, the Assam Cabinet has approved the renaming of Karimganj district to Sribhumi. The decision aims to honor the district’s rich cultural heritage and give it a distinct identity. This announcement was made on November 19, 2024, during a key Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The name “Sribhumi” holds deep historical and cultural roots. It reflects the vision of Rabindranath Tagore, who referred to the region as Sribhumi, symbolizing its geographical and cultural significance in undivided India. This renaming seeks to restore the old glory of Assam’s southernmost district, while resonating with the aspirations of its people.
According to the government, this change is not just symbolic but a step towards preserving and promoting the district’s unique identity. The Cabinet emphasized that the new name aligns with the sentiments of the local population and respects its historical legacy.
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a post on the microblogging platform ‘X,’ highlighted the cultural and historical significance of renaming Karimganj district to Sribhumi. He stated, “Over a 100 years ago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore had described modern day Karimganj District in Assam as ‘Sribhumi’- the land of Maa Lakshmi. Today the #AssamCabinet has fulfilled this long standing demand of our people.”
