Assam Government to Operationalise 10 New Co-Districts from August 15, 2025; Major Reshuffle in Police Administration

Guwahati, May 16, 2025: In a decisive step to enhance grassroots governance and streamline public service delivery, the Government of Assam has announced the operationalisation of 10 new co-districts from August 15, 2025. This expansion will increase the total number of functional co-districts to 49, adding to the existing 39 that have been in operation since the introduction of the co-district model last year.

The co-district framework was initiated as a strategic administrative measure to decentralize governance, allowing for better coordination between civil and police administration. Each co-district functions under an appointed Co-District Superintendent of Police (SP), aiding in localized law enforcement and community policing.

To align with this expanded administrative structure, the Assam Government has implemented a major reshuffle of Assam Police Service (APS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) officers. These appointments are designed to ensure efficient law enforcement across both existing and newly created co-districts.
