Section 144 Imposed in South Salmara Mankachar to Mitigate Flood Risks
Desk Report, June 19, 2024: In response to flood-related risks during the rainy season, District Magistrate Rahul Kumar Gupta has imposed restrictions under Section 144 of the CrPC 1973 in South Salmara Mankachar district. The order, effective from June 18, 2024, prohibits the movement of people near the Brahmaputra River bank and restricts gatherings of more than four people along the border road from Hatsingimari Tiniali to Sishumara BOP between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
The official notification reads, “In exercise of the power conferred upon me under Section 144 Cr.P.C., I hereby prohibit the movement of people near the bank of the Brahmaputra River and the assembly of more than four persons from Hatsingimari Tiniali (Botertol Tiniali) under the jurisdiction of South Salmara Mankachar district to Sishumara BOP through the border road between 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.”
Exemptions are provided for Executive Magistrates, police, army, para-military personnel, and those engaged in emergency services. The prohibition does not apply to gatherings for marketing, sports, educational purposes, or at bus stations. Violations of this order are punishable under Section 188 of the IPC.
These measures aim to enhance public safety and mitigate flood-related dangers. The restrictions will remain in force until further notice.
