Anti-India Messages Spark Fear in Dhubri Border Belt

Villagers in Dhubri Receive Threat Calls from Bangladesh
Dhubri, August 20: The border district Dhubri has been gripped by tension after villagers reported receiving threatening calls and audio messages allegedly from individuals linked to Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), a fundamentalist group in Bangladesh.
Residents of Lakhimari and Bishkhowa villages under Golakganj police station informed police that the threats originated from a Bangladeshi number. The audio messages explicitly warned of “terrible consequences” if anyone arrested by security forces was handed over to the authorities. Villagers were also cautioned that their houses could be set on fire if they cooperated with the police in actions against the outfit.
The fresh wave of threats comes close on the heels of an Independence Day incident, when Golakganj police apprehended a youth near the Indo-Bangladesh border with a Bangladeshi SIM card and national flag in his possession. The youth was later remanded to judicial custody.
Following the circulation of the threatening messages, anxious villagers have approached the Golakganj police, urging them to strengthen security measures in the border belt. The development has prompted security agencies to intensify surveillance, as the region remains sensitive due to its porous border and history of cross-border activities.
Local residents, however, remain fearful. Many expressed concern that the growing frequency of such threats could indicate a larger anti-India nexus taking shape along the Dhubri border, posing a direct challenge to peace and stability in the region.
