Anti-Romeo Squad to be Deployed for Successful Sharadiya Durgotsav in Cachar District
Cachar Police has taken a significant step to ensure the safety of women and maintain order during the Sharadiya Durgotsav. To address security concerns, an “Anti-Romeo Squad” has been formed under the leadership of Superintendent of Police, Nomal Mahatta. The squad was deployed in Cachar after receiving 15 days of rigorous training from experts brought in from outside the district.
This specialized force, composed of police officers and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, is focused on preventing any disturbances during the festival. After completing their training, the squad conducted drills across the city to demonstrate their readiness. The primary objective is to create a safe and welcoming environment for the thousands of devotees who gather in Silchar each year to celebrate.
Speaking to the media, Superintendent Nomal Mahatta emphasized the historical significance of Silchar and how Durgotsava brings together a massive crowd. However, this influx of people often leads to challenges, particularly for women and children, who face difficulties navigating the crowded streets. Mahatta pointed out that unruly youths on motorcycles have been known to harass women during the festivities.
To address these concerns, the Anti-Romeo Squad will conduct 24-hour patrols across the district, with officers on motorcycles maintaining constant vigilance. The force has been trained to handle any incidents of harassment or misbehavior, ensuring that law and order prevail during the celebrations. Special attention has been given to the training of female officers, who are an essential part of this operation.
Last year, the people of Cachar widely appreciated the efforts of the Anti-Romeo Squad. Superintendent Mahatta expressed confidence that this year, too, the public will cooperate with the police to make the Sharadiya festival a success. He reiterated the commitment of Cachar Police to protect the citizens and maintain a peaceful atmosphere during the event.
The proactive approach of the police, coupled with the deployment of the specialized squad, has already been welcomed by local residents. The security measures reflect the authorities’ dedication to ensuring that the festival remains a joyful and safe occasion for all.
