Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the crackdown on social media, emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens from unscrupulous lenders.
“In a statewide crackdown, we’ve apprehended 122 individuals,” stated CM Sarma on X. Alongside arrests, the police seized cash, loan agreements, gold jewelry, land mortgage documents, and bank records. The initiative aims to shield the vulnerable poor and middle-class from these exploitative practices.

Over the past days, police statewide intensified efforts against illegal money lenders, with all apprehended individuals found with extorted funds. Operating illicit money lending rackets, they imposed high interest rates on customers, leading to harassment and loan-shark-like behavior.
