Assam CM Reviews Eco-Zone Plan for Deepar Beel at 21st Wildlife Board Meet

Guwahati April 23, 2025: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired the 21st meeting of the State Board for Wildlife in Dispur. The high-level gathering focused on critical steps to protect the state’s rich biodiversity.

During the meeting, the government reviewed progress on conservation projects. A key topic was the proposed Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around the Deepar Beel Wildlife Sanctuary.

This wetland is vital for both wildlife and local communities. So, authorities aim to preserve its delicate balance while planning nearby development.

The proposal for an ESZ highlights the state’s effort to combine ecological protection with urban growth. It also follows national environmental guidelines.

Dr. Sarma emphasized that Assam remains fully committed to wildlife conservation. But he also stressed the need for sustainable development.

Senior forest officials, wildlife experts, and board members attended the session. They shared inputs and backed stronger protection for key habitats.

The CM also directed departments to fast-track approvals for ongoing eco-projects. So, execution delays can be reduced and conservation goals met on time.

The Deepar Beel area, home to many bird species and aquatic life, is a priority zone. Its preservation will also support local livelihoods and promote eco-tourism.

The state board will soon finalize the ESZ boundaries after detailed reviews and public consultation.

This move, once approved, will strengthen Assam’s green policy. And it shows the government’s resolve to protect natural assets while ensuring responsible development.
